I have been using this trick to get all the webpages I want to read bundled in an eBook that I can carry offline and read on my Nexus One. You can also use any ePub compatible reader, e.g. on your iPad too.

Requirements

1. Google Nexus One (or any other smartphone or mobile device which has an ePub eBook reader)

2. Aldiko on Google Nexus One (or your preferred ePub eBook reader on your device)

3. Instapaper account

Method

1. Add the Instapaper Read Later Bookmarklet to your browser bookmark bar.

To do that, on your account, click on Add+, then drag the “Read Later” bookmarket into your browser’s bookmark bar

2. On any webpage that you want to read later, click the Read Later bookmarklet to save it to Instapaper. When you’re done saving several webpages of different sites, that will constitute your eBook, proceed to step 3:

3. On Instapaper, Add a new folder and name it.

4. On Instapaper, in Unread, move all the pages you want to read into the folder you just created. Once done, proceed to 5.

5. On your Nexus One (or other device), browse to Instapaper.com.

6. Select the folder you want to create an eBook out of.

7. Click the ePub icon underneath the Download (Beta) section

8. The eBook will download. Once downloaded, Click on it and it will be imported in your Aldiko bookshelf and you can read it offline.

Troubleshooting

Sometimes, step 8 doesn’t work. In that case, just download the .ePub file from a desktop or laptop and transfer it to your device manually.

My preferred settings for Aldiko are:
- Disabled screen rotation: I want to be able to read resting on my side when in bed
- Use Volume buttons to flip pages (and disable touching the screen to flip pages)
- Page flip time at minimum
- Readable font size

Marissa Mayer from Google answers this: “It’s not what you know, it’s what you can find out”:

On that note — and in terms of future Internet innovation, the important question may not be how the Internet is changing how we think but instead how the Internet is teaching itself to think.

My own view is that Google is fundamentally a better company for the long run. Apple and Google will clash on several front as from this year as I wrote here.

Totally great list. I use most of these myself. I also add to the chorus of gratitude to the WordPress team. WordPress powers YashLabs since 2005 after I compared it to Joomla and Drupal.

I say Google Nexus One because I know Google will subsidize my Telecommunication costs in the future, massively disrupting the Traditional Telco industry, but the people say “Apple Tablet” for now.

Also, the Nexus One is just a few days away, whereas the tablet has had some setbacks for the launch date. Make no mistake though: when the Apple tablet is released, it will be a truly fantastic product – the one you will use for reading books, watching clips and do video-conferencing, etc…

I argued that a CPU and a GPU are two very different beasts and that AMD did well to buy ATI rather than re-invent the wheel in this post earlier.

1. Google Telecom, Hello! – July 2nd, 2007

I envisioned then as TechCrunch had featured a rumour that Google was going to buy GrandCentral, that Google was bent on becoming a Telco or ISP themselves.

The acquisition of GrandCentral and mobile ambitions – The Google phone?

GrandCentral provides you with one phone number linked to all your existing phone numbers, and many other features (thanks to Techcrunch for this great overview) through its website and also through your mobile.

There have been rumors of the Google phone before, and such a device with the mobile Google applications, linked to all the Google integrated goodies mentioned above would be pure bliss for managing and sharing data and event information with contacts when either online or offline thanks to Google Gears.

Google’s killer move

Here is what I predict will happen with Google Telecom. Based on the current state of Telecom, i.e. VOIP disrupting the industry with the old Telcos still charging too much while there are cheaper VOIP offers like the Gizmo Project, Skype, VBuzzer and Jajah, Google will adopt a similar strategy to Google Apps. With Google Apps, Google has a tiered access: free access for users and paid access for businesses.

I believe Google Telecom will offer free calls locally and worldwide to fixed telephone lines and mobiles to individual users and basic paid access for businesses and bring a more severe disruption of the Telecom industry as it will rely on getting more advertising through these channels. Alternately, Google could use the Google Web infrastructure to position itself as an ISP and offer free Internet access to all too.

That’s a killer strategy, and they can pull it off. Beautifully at that.

2. How Apple will revolutionize music-making – March 11th, 2007

Apple

Months before the launch of the iPhone, I foresaw how the multi-touch device will change the way we make music, essentially because multi-touch is organic and enables the use of the device as Midi controllers.

However, the iPhone and the iPod Touch are a little too small for a big revolution. The forthcoming tablet will be different. Being bigger, we can expect many more practical uses like playing virtual instruments live, using the tablet as a virtual mixer and sequencer and so on.

Conclusion

The whole experience of how you make music within a sequencer with virtual instruments is about to be revolutionized by Apple with a forthcoming combination of multi-touch hardware and software based on Logic and running on at least Leopard.

The very act of recording, manipulating and producing music on a computer will become an organic performance in itself.

I don’t know when it’s coming, but I do know it’s soon, probably this year, and it’s going to be Apple and Leopard+.

A revolution is under way. It is one of those times when technologies developed separately converge and congeal. From this emerges a new system that is better than the sum of its parts.

3. The Web O.S. / The Cloud – October 10th, 2005

This begs the question of how to propagate technical requirements to an underlying platform to enhance the end-user’s experience with Web 2.0.

The first point of contact is the user’s browser.

My view of the Web OS is that it must be a combination of the computer’s OS and the browser. …

Given Firefox and AJAX and great web services, there will be an increasing migration of desktop applications to remotely hosted locations on the web. Of course, not all applications can be hosted this way yet – desktop installed apps will still be around for a long time.

But assuming increased hosted services, it is a simple and logical step to envision that the computer OS can itself be tweaked for Web 2.0 usage. In other words, you could enhance existing Web support, but in addition, you could also strip an existing computer OS from any superfluous capabilities and code. You would then obtain a low-cost alternative to the bloated (and sometimes expensive) OSes currently available.

These WebOS 2.0 PC’s, being cheaper, could be used to power schools, especially in developing and third world countries and businesses alike.

Businesses would also benefit of broadband connections to leverage hosted services.

Although schools in poor areas may have broadband, they would still benefit of the network architecture: imagine just one server providing the necessary web services to a class of pupils. They could all be writing their assignment with a software like Writely.

The whole of the software service maintenance is outsourced – this is less costly in time and money for anyone using a PC with Web OS.

Of note recently is the announcement of the partnership between Google and Sun for cross-marketing of their services. This fuelled a lot of speculation about whether a Web version of StarOffice would be in the works. In addition, people have been talking about a possible Google browser and GoogleOS.

I envision the future Web O.S. to be a stripped down Linux distribution with subsequent enhancements. And the single distribution which is poised as the best contender has to be Mark Shuttleworth’s forever free Ubuntu Linux.

Based on the above, I don’t think Google is preparing a browser or O.S. Because both the browser (Firefox) and the Computer OS (Ubuntu Linux) already exist, it doesn’t seem to be a good strategy to me.

4. Firefox – October 20th, 2005

In December 2009, Firefox overtakes IE 7 to become the Word’s most popular browser.

My weapon of choice in this area is Firefox and it should be yours too. Mozilla’s awesome open-source browser is highly customizable through a variety of extensions. A personal favourite is GreaseMonkey which allows you to install scripts that personalize the browsing experience of some sites, removing annoyances in some cases or enhancing functionality in others.

My view of the Web OS is that it must be a combination of the computer’s OS and the browser. The advantage with a browser like Firefox is that it is already cross-platform and standards-based. It is therefore a candidate of choice for basing any development of the Web 2.0 services.

I also praised Firefox in this other post in November 2005 – Firefox, the world best browser.

Not only that, but the Mozilla team, true to Open Source spirit, regularly updated the browser. More specifically, they patched any flaw very rapidly.

5. Ruby on Rails – October 10th, 2005

Thanks to launching with Ruby on Rails, Twitter has managed to raise $25M at the end of this year.

Ruby on Rails is a Rapid Web Development framework built using Ruby, an open-source and truly object-oriented programming language.

I am quite fond of Matsumoto-san’s Ruby language and hence I founded a local Ruby user Group.

Ruby on Rails has made the development of new web services a disarmingly simple thing to do. The very implementation of the Rails framework enables you not to have to repeat yourself in your code. Actually, a lot of the code is automatically generated.

Thanks to David Heinemeier Hansson and thousand of other contributors, RoR is and will continue to be a driving force for evolving Web 2.0 because it’s now easy and fast to build new applications. It’s also worth mentioning that RoR now incorporates AJAX functionality by default.

6. Open-source

I have been involved in Linux User Groups and the open-source community for more than a decade and I use and recommend open-source software for that much to enterprises and individuals alike.

Open-source continues to grow as an influential way of building technology and businesses. Sometimes, the open-source product is better engineered than the commercial product, since:

Therefore, building proprietary solutions from scratch is an increasingly losing battle. It is much better to build around open-source software and open standards, ensuring interoperability and robustness.

Facebook, Twitter, WordPress, Ubuntu, Google, Apple Mac OS X are all built with or around open-source software.

By the way, Eric Raymond, the term ‘open source’ won – we rarely hear of Free Software anymore. However, let’s not forget the seminal work of Richard Stallman.

At the close of 2009, one of the most impressive companies of the decade relies heavily on Open-source software, contributes heavily to the Open-Source community and has evolved into a major player in several industries by building a hybrid business model:

Proprietary or closed-sourced core algorithms and technology

Heavily leverage open-source technology and contribute back to the community

That company is Google and is a great model for merging technology and business and succeeding in the digital age and the knowledge economy. Note that to replicate Google’s success, you also have to rely heavily on Engineers and Engineering in Computer Science.

In turn I was hoping that this award, which follows the Oscar, would give more visibility to “An Inconvenient Truth“, the documentary which shows most of Gore’s presentation.

I covered the documentary in a previous post on eye-opening movies and if you haven’t seen it yet, now is a good time to do so.

In life, sometimes one door closes, but floodgates open instead.

1. Collektik – Hugh McGuire

Hugh is the mastermind behind project LibriVox, which harnesses open participation and open-source software together with the free content of Project Gutenberg to provide you with a growing collection of free audio-books for your listening pleasure.

Wasn’t that a long sentence? Well, through LibriVox, a volunteer could read it out loud, record it, upload it onto the site so you could in turn freely get it as a long audio sentence in mp3 for your media player. And if it’s too long, people can collaborate on the task too.

Come see his newest project, Collectik. It’s like mixtapes but for podcasts.

Or else he might also present a super-secret stealth-ninja-mode project. Something kept under wraps behind a second closed vault door or something.

2. Kakiloc – Martin Dufort

A location-based mobile social networking project. Austin Hill is said to have gently persuaded Martin Dufort to present – something involving twisting arms.

3. iotum Talk Now

iotum Talk-Now enables you to customize your availability information and share it through your BlackBerry.

4. Open Source Cinema – Brett Gaylor

Brett Gaylor was the host of the first impromptu Mashpit in Montreal so that an ad-hoc team of four (Brett, Hugh, Sylvain and myself) met around mostly Macs, a few Sleeman beers and some tasty end-of-night whiskey all soaked up in pizza to help bring his Drupal-based collaborative web-site to fruition. Brett is currently working on “Basement Tapes” a movie about free culture. During his project, he’s met some little-known people like Lawrence Lessig, DJ Girltalk and me.

5. BumpTop

Anand Agarawala from Toronto will present BumpTop’s revolutionary interface technology which puts physics and realism back into your bland 2D GUI.

Quick Presentation Tips

At DemoCamp, there are no slides. This can be tricky. Here are a few tips to keep in mind and also put in practice for your experience to be a success:

1. Know you goal for presenting at DemoCamp
2. Based on your goal, define your audience
3. Know which language and communication style you want to use with your audience
4. Communicate the benefits of your projects, your goals early.

For instance, if your goal is to find funding for your startup, then you know you want to reach angel investors and venture capitalists. You should then make it clear that your objective is to find funding but make sure also that you manage to make a convincing case of your business benefits very early. I’d say about 80% of your presentation should be about the business benefits and 20% about the technology itself to also cater for the geek audience in this example.

Of course there are other goals to presenting at DemoCamp, just make sure you communicate the benefits clearly to your audience. Clear communication will also make it easier for us to spread the good news about your projects and technology and about you too.

Faste-Fou

J’ai retrouvé Deborah et Christelle au Faste-fou sur St-Hubert juste avant et j’y ai passé un excellent moment en leur compagnie. Deborah était déjà habillée en Leprechaun pour l’occasion de la Saint-Patrick – toute en verte avec la ceinture ornée de trèfle à quatre feuilles – et a savouré son énorme plat de frites en deux-temps-trois-mouvements. Christelle a hâte d’avoir son chien “Mira”.

La nourriture au Faste-fou était très bonne, la musique pas forte, ce qui fait qu’on a pu parler tranquillement entre nous. Par la suite, Christelle n’a pas pu tenir bien longtemps – elle voulait absolument faire le plein de bonbons chez Oscar juste à côté.

Oscar

Chez Oscar c’était l’embarras du choix. Christelle a finalement jeté son dévolu sur des bonbons bicolores très acidulés que j’ai bien aimé (elle m’a généreusement laissé en puiser deux dans son stock personnel, dont le lime-raisin et l’excellent citron-orange je crois). Deborah a choisi des “lèvres chaudes”, bonbons rouges épicés et même forts à l’après goût. Et nous avons aussi pris des bonbons en forme de coeurs avec des petits messages dessus pour en offrir aux bloggeurs.

Salle Belle Gueule, RJ Brasseurs

En route vers RJ Brasseurs, Christelle me faisait la présentation de son quartier avec l’aide de Deborah. J’ai donc eu droit à une présentation de l’Auberge avec sauna, la salle miroir, etc… Deborah mentionna l’exterminator juste en bas. On s’est bien marré. Merci pour la visite du quartier.

A RJ Brasseurs, il y avait déjà pas mal de gens, mais personne que j’avais déjà vu au dernier Yulblog encore. Mais plus tard, j’ai revu Laurent et Jean-Luc (et cette fois-ci on a discuté d’informatique avec Jean-Luc) et j’ai rencontré Judith.

J’ai aussi rencontré Johanne a qui parlait Christelle. Je lui ai demandé si elle avait un blog. Elle a répondu par la négative mais qu’elle en lisait. C’est la maman de Vanou ! J’ai revu très brièvement Ulka et AJ. J’y ai aussi vu Patrick, Geneviève, Sp4m, André et sa femme. J’ai parlé à Marie-Jo, qui est dans l’industrie des jeux vidéos et d’autres que j’oublie probablement (excusez-moi, mais je vous reconnaîtrai quand même la prochaine fois).

J’ai revu Sylvain avec qui j’avais participé au premier Mashpit de Montréal. Sylvain avait fait une présentation sur les Microformats à la Conférence PHP-Québec. Il a dit que l’audience a bien aimé lorsqu’il a démontré comment utiliser les Microformats avec le plugin Operator de Firefox pour avoir facilement la carte de l’endroit où se passait Yulblog. J’ai moi aussi écrit sur les Microformats récemment.

Au bar

André avait mis sur le bar du papier et un stylo avec la question traditionnelle pour les rencontres de Yulbloggeurs, qui était cette fois: “Si vous devriez écrire un livre, quel en serait le titre ?”. Alors, je me suis dis que j’allais y inscrire un titre moi aussi. Ce faisant, je rencontrai à côté du papier sur le bar, Benji, avec qui on a parlé de son blog et un peu de politique. Juste après, quelques amis de Benji sont arrivés, et j’ai fait connaissance avec Mélanie.

Mélanie a dit qu’elle préparait un film et que c’était pour Kino. Je lui ai dis que je pensais faire la même chose mais en me donnant une contrainte, celle de n’utiliser que mon appareil photo numérique. Parfois, les contraintes forcent à trouver des solutions créatives.

Refusant les bonbons au départ, Mélanie a craqué par la suite et elle a eu (entre de nombreux autres) deux coeurs bleus collés qui portaient tous les deux le texte “Hold Me”. “C’est pour ça qu’ils sont collés” m’a-t-elle dit, ce qui était marrant. On parla musique de film, et elle m’a dit qu’elle avait déjà une collaboratrice potentielle pour son film mais que la collaboration n’était pas certaine encore. Alors je lui ai proposé de lui faire la musique de son film qui sera une comédie avec un sujet marrant.

“C’est l’histoire de quelqu’un qui ment mais qui arrive quand même à ses fins.” dit Mélanie.
“C’est autobiographique ?”
“Non.” répondit-elle
“Sauf si tu mens.” lui dis-je
“Mais ça tu ne le sauras pas.” répondit Mélanie.

J’étais content de te rencontrer et je te souhaite bonne continuation avec ton film que j’espère voir à un Kino prochain. Ne soit pas trop perfectionniste, c’est un piège parfois – on a l’impression de ne jamais finir son oeuvre parce qu’on veut toujours l’améliorer.

I [heart] sweets

Les bonbons eurent pas mal de succès. Je n’étais pas trop fan des lèvres chaudes de Deborah (je parle des “bonbons” de Deborah, esprits tordus – oops, même là ça sonne ambigü !) mais Deborah, elle, ne s’en lassait visiblement pas. How you can call these “sweets” is beyond me.

Sof a bien aimé les bonbons en coeur, et en a prit plein pour en distribuer à son tour à ses amis. Elle vient de Paris mais ça fait plusieurs années qu’elle vit au Québec et elle était très souriante.

Je suis allé proposé des bonbons en coeur à deux bloggeuses, dont une, blonde, me rappelle une amie américaine, Nancy, que j’ai rencontrée à Genève.

“J’offre des bonbons en échange de bisous.” dis-je facétieusement

Politique de célibat urbain

L’offre n’a pas trouvé preneuse, mais les bonbons géneralement oui. Lorsque je lui ai demandé si elle avait un blog elle a répondu par l’affirmative et qu’elle parlait de politique urbaine. Et son amie, rousse, m’a dit qu’elle écrivait sur l’astrophysique. Avec la lueur facétieuse qu’elle avait dans les yeux, Andrée-Anne, la première, n’était pas très crédible – j’ai (presque) tout de suite vu que c’était une comique.

Alors, j’ai beaucoup taquiné Andrée-Anne par la suite en lui disant que la prochaine fois je lui emmènerai des bonbons au Valium parce qu’elle avait trop d’énergie pour faire ce genre de farce. Andrée-Anne est l’auteur de “célibataire urbaine“. Elle osait juste pas dire qu’elle est célibataire. Quoique, la politique du célibat pourrait être le sujet d’un blog aussi, c’est plausible.

Andrée-Anne est très marrante et pétillante et son blog aussi, et je pense qu’elle a de fortes chances d’être une des prochaines Yulbloggeuses à avoir son livre issu d’un blog.

Nuque Tattoo

Juste au moment de rentrer, j’ai aperçu FannyArdente et Célinie, ce qui m’a fait plaisir. Aux dernières nouvelles, Célinie n’ose toujours pas avoir son propre blob. Fanny avait le sourire, mais elle était un peu fatiguée, subissant les retombées d’un tatouage fraîchement apposé sur la nuque. On a eu très peu de temps pour discuter avant que je ne parte ce qui est dommage mais on se rattrappera sans doute.

En rentrant, j’ai fait un bout de chemin avec Deborah, Christelle, Jean-Luc et Judith dans la neige. Avec Jean-Luc et Judith, on a parlé des trois livres dans le métro. Je suis rentré en marchant du métro Mont-Royal sur la belle avenue comme d’habitude.

Now we know why Christelle is so sweet and Deborah is spicy.

Je ne suis pas un vieux garçon

La table réservée à côté de la baie vitrée étant vide, je me suis dit qu’il n’y avait personne encore. Mais non, ils étaient bien déjà là, mais timidement, s’étaient installés autour des tables à l’intérieur. Je m’avançais donc vers le ou les groupes afin de faire connaissance.

Une dame me demanda: “Es-tu un vieux garcon ?”

“Je fais si vieux que ça ???” lui répondis-je incrédule.

Et c’est ainsi que je rencontrai Panthère-Rousse. Je ne sus que bien plus tard que les Vieux Garçons semblent être deux bloggeurs qui se font appeler ainsi.

Film the Film-maker

Ensuite, j’ai fait connaissance avec Jean-Luc, mais très rapidement. “Salut” sympathique et poignée chaleureuse, mais je n’ai pas eu le temps de lui parler plus que ça car j’ai été vite happé par Laurent qui voulait m’éterniser dans ses clips. On se rattrappera.

“Tu as 30 secondes ?”

S’ensuivit une interview impromptue que je filmais aussi en même temps (je fais ça tout le temps, faudra s’y faire et ça vous évitera de trop faire le malin). J’en profitais donc aussi pour interviewer Laurent. Ça le changera pour une fois.

On parla de technopoles car il y a travaillé et moi-même j’ai étudié et travaillé dans la technopole Rennes-Atalante-Beaulieu et je m’intéresse au phénomène de grappes technologiques, surtout celui de Silicon Valley. Il me parla aussi de son activité en tant que consultant en TIC pour les startups.

Le blog comme un outil de communication sans barrières

Me retournant, je rencontrais Daniel, un menuisier de profession, qui me fit part de son expérience avec le web, et plus tard avec le blog. Il a écrit un texte poético-philosophique sur l’évolution de l’homme et de sa cohabitation destructrice avec la planète sur son blog et son fils de 15 ans a envoyé le texte à une collaboratrice d’Hubert Reeves. Celle-ci lui a répondu.

C’est magnifique comment les blogs peuvent faire engager des conversations entre gens dans des domaines aussi variés.

Toutes les Vanessa sont évanescentes

Juste après je décidais de parler à une jeune femme qui avait un très beau sourire, le genre de sourire qui illumine le visage mais aussi tout ce qu’il y a autour. J’avais mal entendu son nom au départ, pensant que c’était “Manu” pour “Emmanuelle” mais en fait, c’était “Vanou” pour “Vanessa”. J’ai deux amies qui s’appellent ainsi, et je dis toujours que les Vanessa sont évanescentes.

Elle m’a parlé de ses photos qu’elle met sur Flickr. Elle m’a dit qu’il y a après des gens pour rajouter des descriptions. Vanou me refila sa carte, et bien que je n’arrivais pas à retrouver le nom de la chose, je me suis rendu compte que c’était une ‘Moo-Card’ et que j’avais déjà dû voir ça sur son blog à elle, en cherchant des informations sur Yulblog. Vanou fait de très belles photos de Yulblog (elle en a fait un panoramique) et d’elle-même.

Vanou m’a dit qu’elle partait pour les Philippines. Et c’est ainsi que Vanessa, évanescente, s’évanouit vers les pays tropicaux à peine rencontrée. Mais pas avant que j’aie eu l’occasion de revoir son beau sourire. Une autre bloggeuse, France, dira dans un commentaire que c’est une belle personne, et je suis d’accord.

Il s’était formé des groupuscules çà et là. J’allais un moment de nouveau vers la table réservée et recontrais alors Ulka et AJ. Ulka me dit qu’elle travaillait dans la conception et la programmation Web et qu’elle faisait aussi de la danse. Mais elle ne m’avait pas dit qu’elle s’intéressait aussi des arts martiaux. Cachottière ! AJ m’expliquait qu’il se demandait s’il n’allait pas séparer son blog en deux parties distinctes afin de différencier les écrits professionnels des écrits personnels, chose que je me demandais aussi ces derniers temps. Je leur parlai de mes origines.

Je repartis alors vers un autre groupuscule. Je ne me souviens pas de ce que j’ai dit exactement, mais c’était probablement quelque chose de gentiment provocateur. Sur ce, un gars à ma droite, surpris sans doute de ma présence, me dit tout de go qu’il est ‘marié’ en me ‘présentant’ sa ‘femme’. Je serrais la main à la jeune femme et je me retrouvais devant des yeux très intenses et c’est ainsi que je fis la connaissance de FannyArdente. Elle se présenta et écrivit l’adresse de son blog sur une carte que je lui passais. Bien évidemment, elle n’etait pas mariée à l’autre qui, du coup, voyant que sa tactique débile n’avait pas marché, s’est barré sans demander son reste.

Belle énergie pour une belle personne.

Toi aussi écris ton blob sur l’Intarweb

Je rencontrai alors assez rapidement Célinie, une amie de FannyArdente, mais qui n’est pas encore bloggeuse. Célinie fait plusieurs activités et m’a récemment laissé un commentaire sur mon blog (c’est bien toi, hein ?). Alors Célinie, on attend tous que tu t’y mettes maintenant. Fanny devrait t’encourager à ouvrir ton “blob” comme elle dit (ça me fait rire à chaque fois). J’ai aussi parlé à Josée.

J’ai rencontré Feloisa avec qui j’ai beaucoup parlé de plein de sujets différents et aussi un monsieur dont le prénom m’échappe et qui n’avait pas de blog mais avec qui j’ai discuté de la culture Québecoise.

Ensuite, retour vers la table et j’ai encore une fois filmé Laurent pendant qu’il interviewait un bloggeur, assisté de Christelle qui tenait la lampe de poche afin d’illuminer le visage de l’interviewé.

More Moo-Cards

Je m’assis à la table, et je discutais un moment avec Christelle qui me laissa choisir une Moo-Card. Je pris celle qui montrait de la neige car ça me rappellera que je t’ai rencontrée à Montréal en hiver.

A ma droite, se trouvait le très sympathique Jay. Il m’a dit qu’il s’occupait de copyright autant que je m’en souvienne, et en voyant son blog, j’ai compris que nous avions pas mal de centres d’intérêt communs. Jay m’a aussi laissé une Moo-Card.

The Montreal Tech League

Une jeune femme assez grande est venue s’asseoir avec nous, et j’ai été surpris de voir qu’elle connaissait mon nom losque je lui ai dit mon prénom. Mais en fait, c’est normal, puisque c’est une membre de la Ligue Technologique de Montréal (MTL) que j’ai lancée il y a un mois. J’ai donc ‘reconnu’ Deborah alias SekhmetDesign et on a beaucoup parlé. Deborah m’a dit qu’elle aimerait bien que l’on fasse plus de promotion du forum de la MTL. On a aussi mentionné la soirée Copynight que l’on aimerait voir. Ça m’a fait plaisir de te recontrer enfin, Deborah.

Même métier, deux points de vue opposés

Petite discussion ensuite avec LadyZeek qui n’allait pas fort récemment, mais aux dernières nouvelles elle avait un post des plus positifs. Allez, ça devrait aller maintenant.

Après, je rencontrai SongtoSing, très marrante et originale, et aussi
UnAutreProf, qui elle était très heureuse de son métier d’enseignante, charmante aussi.

FannyArdente, généreuse, était presque prête à ramener toutes ses amies en voiture, mais finalement elle a enlevé son manteau pour replonger encore un fois dans l’arène des Yulbloggeurs. Beaucoup d’énergie, j’ai dit.

Night in the city

Je raccompagnai Feloisa jusqu’à l’avenue du Mont-Royal et elle me parla du lancement du livre du blog “Un Taxi la Nuit“, ce qui est quelque chose d’assez remarquable.

Je rentrai à pied en savourant les derniers moments de l’hiver Québecois sur la belle avenue.

C’était une belle soirée, j’y ai fait de belles rencontres. Au plaisir de vous revoir, bloggeurs Montréalais.

back to the point though, i was among the guys who didnt really understand the real benefits of darwin and evonium – and the implications of dynamic business information systems. i just have academic courses on business processes reengineering, but compared to your experience, i guess its nothing, so i was wondering if you would care write a post about it, what’s so good about live and dynamic business systems?

Hi Heri, it’s not nearly as live blogging as I would like it to be though. It did take some time for me too to understand the actual benefits and the implications. Thanks for the compliment.

The faster you can review your business process and the integrated Information Systems at their core, then the more agile you are compared to your competitors and towards the ever faster changing business environment.

Your organization then is a dynamically evolutive or adaptative organism. This is why the teams we saw used ‘Evolution’, ‘DARWIN’ and ‘Evonium’ as their names and trademarks. The metaphor however, rather refers to adaptability within a single organism instead of evolution through mating of two organisms (and cross-over + mutation).

With this architecture, Business Process Re-engineering can be more easily performed, as one of the bottlenecks in revising your enterprise data model is how relational database work.

New data model design => data-cleansing code => data-migration => new data access methods (C.R.U.D.) => new business logic => new forms to access them => new documentation => new training, etc…

The less time you take to do that, the more agile you are to step up your business process within the competitive industry (e.g. Porter’s Five Forces Model) and environment.

That’s what these technologies enable you to do: build business agility, adaptability. Also, the less time I take at any point within my business stack to revise things, the better I can optimize my profit margin (e.g. Porter’s Enterprise Value-Chain).

Now to further explore what is possible within this natural evolution metaphor, I can envision a Genetic Algorithm applied to a whole business stack to explore the whole solution space of all business processes as per a specific industry or business function.

I could even start with some Global Best Practices within the gene pool and launch the algorithm, monitor the results to find the optimal Business Process.
